The Scottish Ambulance Service is the frontline of the NHS in Scotland, responding to over 600,000 emergency calls a year with 450 vehicles, we provide an emergency Ambulance Service to a population of over 5 million people, across the mainland and island communities.

We are committed to developing a workforce capable of delivering the highest levels of quality service and clinical, person-centred care. The role of Advanced Practitioner Critical Care (APCC) is an excellent opportunity for career development within a clinical role. The evolution of the Scottish Trauma Network (STN) has provided the platform to develop the role of the APCC, not just for badly injured patients, but also the entire spectrum of critical care and cardiac arrest.

Operating at this level, the clinician will possess a wide-ranging breadth of knowledge and understanding in addition to evidence of critical thinking, patient assessment and clinical care.  Delivery of this advanced level of care will be supported by a scope of practice beyond what is currently required for registration with the HCPC as a Paramedic or registration with the NMC as a Nurse. The APCC will also be expected to contribute to service wide audit, research, training and education.

Applicants will be a Health and Care Professions Council registered Paramedic or Nursing and Midwifery Council registered Nurse. You will have a minimum of a BSc in a relevant field or equivalent clinical academic qualifications or experience. You will have a significant and demonstrable level of clinical practice within pre-hospital / emergency / critical care. This will typically be a minimum of 5 years post registration experience.

Successful applicants will undertake fully funded Post Graduate modules in Advanced Practice.

To be accepted on the PGCert programme you must have a minimum of one of the following:

  • BSc / BA Honours Degree OR
  • An unclassified degree plus submission of a supporting statement from your line manager and an academic sponsor who support you studying your entry to post-graduate study
  • Be a registered Paramedic and able to demonstrate learning and experience within the context of your professional role which aligns with the outcomes of honours level study (Quality Assurance Agency, 2001), this will be evidenced through your reflective learning statement.

Applicants are advised to read all of the supporting documentation prior to applying.  Please ensure you clearly demonstrate how you meet the criteria in the person specification for this role.

Shortlisted applicants will undertake a practical assessment. Full details of which will be provided before the day.

As this is a training role you will be paid in accordance with AfC Annex 21, with the year one at 70% of top of band 7 and year two at 75% of top of band 7.

As part of your online application, applicants will be required to submit a 500 reflective learning statement based on a past clinical case.

Please note, you will be required to undertake an assessment day. Full details of assessment will be provided prior to the day.
