Why work for us?
Patients are at the centre of everything we do in our daily working lives at NHS Borders ensuring they are safe, cared for efficiently, effectively by suitably experienced and qualified staff driving quality at the heart of patient care. We are a dynamic and forward thinking team with a wealth of clinical and leadership experience. We aim for an open and honest culture and believe in nurturing future stars in NHS.
Borders General Hospital is a modern and well-equipped 284 bed DGH serving the rural Borders area in South East Scotland, approximately 36 miles from Edinburgh.
The Role
This is a replacement post and the successful candidate will join the current Consultant Cardiologists and part time specialty doctor in providing and developing cardiology services for the Borders region. Within the cardiology team we have Specialist Nurses with expertise in chest pain, heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation, and Physiological Measurement Technicians with expertise in echocardiography, pacemaker follow up, respiratory function testing, ambulatory monitoring and treadmill testing.
We have worked very hard to develop a high quality and accessible cardiology service in the Borders. We are active in both research and teaching. There is ample scope for future development and we are seeking an enthusiastic colleague to help take this forward. General cardiology is an important part of this role, but we would support the successful candidate to maintain and develop their own specialist interests. The current consultants have weekly sessions in Lothian in coronary intervention and device implantation and the interventionalist takes part in the regional out of hours PCI rota. A longer term aim is to develop on site permanent pacemaker implantation. Other special interests that could be further developed on site for this post include heart failure and imaging. There is no out of hours commitment with this post. Candidates with an interest in congenital heart disease and imaging would be particularly welcome, but any interested candidates are encouraged to discuss their areas of specialist interest with either Dr Neary or Dr Waszyrowski.
Candidates must hold MRCP or equivalent and must also be registered with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice and on the Specialist Register for Cardiology/Cardiovascular Medicine or be within 6 months of expected date of obtaining CCT or equivalent.
All new consultants are welcome to join the consultant development programme. The programme seeks to provide you with support for the development of leadership and management skills. There are also opportunities for professional coaching and mentoring – an established BGH consultant will be identified as a “buddy” in your first few weeks.
A relocation package, up to full Inland Revenue limits, is available for the successful candidate(s).
