Emergency Care and Medical Services
Band 5 WTE
HASU/ ongoing acute stroke care/ Stroke Rehabilitation

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a rotational programme for stroke care at the Acute North Sector. The post is rotational and incorporates placements in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in our Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), which is a Level Two High Dependency Specialty Area (5 beds), our acute stroke care wards 17/31 and 36 (19 bedded wards), and at Stobhill Hospital in our Stroke Rehabilitation Ward (ward C, 24 bedded).
This is an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse to gain experience in all aspects of stroke care. The rotation is for an 18-month period where the successful candidate would be based in each of the three areas for six months.
The Scottish government has provided funding to the health board to expand our stroke treatments. Within NHS GGC, we currently provide Thrombolysis and now developing our Thrombectomy pathway. The board is continually working to evolve stroke treatment and is commencing Stroke Telemedicine for Thrombolysis. There is the ambition that stroke nurses will be able to provide this treatment.
Within this rotational post, you will be supported by a band 6 experienced HASU nurse who will act as a mentor to provide you with support in the role. In addition, you will be able to expand your clinical knowledge of stroke, as well as learn and be trained in new and exciting forms of treatment.

We can offer the post holder training and qualifications including, and not limited to:
NIHSS - National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale
STARs- Stroke Training and Awareness Resources
STAT- Stroke and TIA Assessment Training Simulation education for thrombolysis treatment
STAT+ Further learning for Thrombectomy treatment

The post provides a platform to launch a career in stroke care. Previous post holders have gone on to become band 6 Thrombolysis Specialty Nurses, and some of these are now progressing to become Thrombectomy Specialty Nurses. The role also provides a platform for progression to Deputy and Senior Charge Nurse Roles, within Stroke as well as Acute Medical Units.

Candidates must be registered nurses. Evidence of on-going professional development is essential. At least 1 year experience within an acute care setting is preferable.
