An opportunity has arisen to recruit a temporary Band 5 nurse on a part time basis to help initiate a new project within . The ‘Bipolar Hub’ is an innovative partnership with a third sector organisation (Bipolar Scotland) and we are looking for a Band 5 Nurse who wishes to help develop and deliver this new model of working which has been successfully adopted for other conditions most notably for Dementia and Addictions. The Bipolar Hub will act a resource for the provision of a range of supports and interventions to complement on-going care provided within CMHT’s. The Hub will cover (in the first instance) and will provide a service to more than one CMHT. It is designed to act as a ‘one stop shop’ resource in order to ensure up-to-date information, advice and support is readily available for individuals with a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. It will support individuals take a more active role in their care through the development of self-management skills whilst reducing overtreatment and non value added clinical contacts.  Such a model would be in line with a ‘Realistic Medicine’ approach as well as placing an emphasis on recovery and greater patient autonomy

The Bipolar Hub will function as an additional resource to the integrated multi-disciplinary CMHT and will:-

Work with people with a diagnosis with Bipolar Disorder who are currently open to CMHTs. It work in partnership with patients, families and  carers, primary care and other agencies to design, implement and oversee comprehensive packages of health and social care (where needed).

Support people with complex mental health needs in a way that is accessible to the individual (and their carers).

Self-management training  and peer support groups will be delivered by Bipolar Scotland

Provide structured therapeutic work in the form of group psychoeducation groups for both patients and carers.

Medication monitoring and management including Lithium and Valporate pathways

Physical health assessment and monitoring. Lifestyle advice including, diet ,support for smoking cessation, pregnancy and family planning advice

Access to pharmacists for advice on medication and side effect monitoring and medication concordance

Advice and information about additional resources such as housing, benefits, carers support and employment supports. Interventions delivered by the Bipolar Hub will be on a “stepped / matched care” basis, based on individualised assessment of need, and will be governed by the principle of the delivery of the minimum effective level of intervention.


This post could be suitable as a secondment opportunity and would enhance the skills of existing or new Band 5 nurses. There will be an emphasis on physical health care within the service and skills in venepunucture and basic physical assessment would be required however training may be available. The shift pattern is still to be confirmed however is likely to be midweek days and occasional evening shifts. This is a fixed term position for 1 year.  Applicants should be a Registered Mental Health Nurse with current NMC registration.
