A fantastic opportunity for a midwife sonographer has arisen to work in our busy Obstetric Ultrasound Department / Fetal Medicine Unit at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. We are an enthusiastic and challenge driven team keen to develop our midwife sonography service generating approx 11,000 scans per year with a team of 5 sonographers.


Raigmore Hospital provides midwifery, obstetric and neonatal care to pregnant women and their families living in the Scottish Highlands.  It covers a wide rural area of 12500 square miles and has approx 2100 births a year.


You should be a qualified midwife sonographer and hold a minimum of Post Graduate Certificate in Obstetric (& Gynaecological) Ultrasound. You will undertake all types of obstetric ultrasound examinations and provide independent reports. You will provide highly specialist knowledge in the field of obstetric ultrasound and work closely with the screening team.


In the Obstetric Ultrasound Department we have a range of high spec ultrasound equipment in the form of -

6 Voluson E10 machines


For the trainee post we would expect you to be a qualified midwife with a degree level qualification or equivalent with extensive post-registration experience, at least 3 years, preferably in antenatal care.


You must have a real desire to train in the area of obstetric ultrasound and demonstrate commitment to the work involved. A mandatory practical aptitude test will be expected prior to agreement of successful application.


You will be expected to undertake a Post Graduate Certificate in Obstetric and Gynaecological Ultrasound attending theory lectures at St Martin’s College, Lancaster. Practical training will be undertaken in our Obstetric Ultrasound Department under supervision of our Fetal Medicine Consultant and Midwife Sonographers. 


Once you have successfully completed your training you will move on to the Band 7 salary scale.
