A rare opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled nurse to join our Medical Centre team.
The team consists of 6 nurses who cover 24 hours a day during term time, a part time admin assistant and a Medical Centre Manager. The team generally work with 2 nurses on during the day and lone working in the evenings and overnight.
The Medical Centre is an integral part of our sector-leading pastoral care.
We look after the health and wellbeing of approximately 800 pupils aged 7-18 years who attend the school as day pupils or living in the boarding school environment. Support from the Medical Centre to 1st aiders and house staff is also required daily, as well as close working with the Health & Safety officer.
Attendance in the Medical Centre can vary in numbers and symptoms. It has twelve beds for in-patient care divided into male and female as required. Daily duties can vary from minor ailments and 1st aid, limb sprains and breaks, concussion, and mental health emergencies as well as supportive chats. Routine vaccines are prevalent as part of child wellbeing and preventative health care. In addition, there is a high level of sports injuries particularly during rugby, cricket and hockey seasons.
There are 11 boarding houses on a campus of over 100 acres and which has a community feel for staff and pupils. The Medical Centre staff are often required to call outs at any of the houses or areas within the grounds and a small buggy is available to the team. Attendance is also required at certain games fixtures and the rota will reflect these duties.
Boarding pupils are registered at a local GP practice who attend the school for clinics 4 per week and are available to call for any assistance. Physiotherapy, podiatry, counselling and psychotherapy are available on a private basis with regular communication into the medical centre.
As part of a multi-disciplinary team the post holder will have responsibility for individual assessment, implementation and evaluation of high-quality care and meeting the health and wellbeing of individuals according to their needs.

Clinical * Ensure effective communication processes are in place to meet the needs of pupils, parents, staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team and referring to colleagues when appropriate.

  • Work within and monitor standards of care within the defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the medical centre and school to ensure adherence to a delivery of a high standard of service Take responsibility for prescribing and administering non-prescription drugs according to the procedures and policies of the medical centre Administer travel and routine vaccination
  •  Assist medical officers where and when required
  • Ensure prevention of infection and correct disposal of waste materials
  • Ensure welfare of any pupil who is staying in the medical centre and administration of prescription drugs

Managerial * Ensure non-prescription medicines and clinical stock is ordered, maintained and managed within the available financial resources.

  • Responsibility for the management of daily operational procedures within the medical centre when on shift
  • Recognise the importance of resolving complaints and/or issues quickly at local level. Support the charge nurse in day-to-day operations
  • Ensure rigid documentation at all times
  • Identifying areas for improvement to make positive changes

Assignment and review The Post holder will be responsible clinically to the Charge Nurse and Medical Officer who will provide clinical guidance and professional management, work review and appraisal of performance. The Medical Centre Manager will be the post holders line manager for all no clinical duties. Workload is mainly self-directed under the leadership of the Charge Nurse.Decisions and judgement * Analysis and assessment of the pupils’ condition to establish continuing care, making autonomous decisions with appropriate referral, and providing advice to both pupil and house staff.

  • Provide clinical and professional advice to pupils, parents and other members of the team and teaching staff where required
  • Assess any change in pupils’ condition and ensure appropriate action is taken. Knowing when and if there is reason to break confidentiality, pass on information following GIRFEC guidelines which is proportionate, reasonable and appropriate.

Hours of work/HolidaysThe hours include weekends/nights during term time (34 weeks), plus 6 weeks paid holidays (taken during school holidays). Salary is for 40 weeks then split over 12 months to allow the candidate 12 equal monthly payments. The Medical Centre Manager allocates the rota which is normally on a 4 week cycle but can change due to sports fixtures, vaccine clinics, training and other requirements of the role.
