Full time / Part time considered - Fixed term for a period of 18 months
We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, visible and credible senior leader to take on the role of Head of Climate Change Delivery for the Centre for Sustainable Delivery (CfSD). The CfSD is expanding its capability through the development of a new climate change sustainability function with an initial focus on the deployment of an ‘Ideal Green Theatres Programme’. As a brand new function there is an opportunity to work with stakeholders across NHS Scotland and Scottish Government to deliver and develop the Green Theatres Action Plan, working with multidisciplinary stakeholders to effect change. This focuses on the delivery of environmental sustainability is aligned with NHS Scotland net zero commitments. .
Working with a range of key policy leaders, subject matter experts and delivery partners, the CfSD will play a key delivery role in driving the environmental sustainability agenda across NHS Scotland. Some of the activities being explored include:
- Structural interventions including reducing the environmental impact of anaesthetic gases including no pipeline nitrous oxide, ventilation, innovative models such as volatile capture. There is also a focus on waste such as the deployment of Neptune Suction equipment, increased uptake and investment in re-usables, waste segregation and recycling. Looking at mechanisms to reduce waste of gas and electricity and increase use of renewable supplies.
- Practice development including non sterile glove review, rubbing not scrubbing, three session working day
There will be multiple delivery mechanisms for effecting change including:
- CfSD joint heat maps and action boards with local Health Boards
- Specialty Delivery Groups ensuring clinical leadership across the change
- Governance structures within and outwith CfSD
- Strong partnership with Scottish Government, Subject Matter Experts and key partners such as NHS National Services Scotland
In addition to mobilising the Green Theatres Programme, the role will provide leadership in the delivery of business cases and scaling and adoption of green initiatives which have generated a strong evidence base and are currently ready for deployment.
This is a role which requires strong capability in multi-disciplinary working with good engagement skills, with an understanding of programme management methodologies. An understanding of the healthcare environmental sustainability practices and the policy perspective of net zero is a core requirement coupled with an understanding of the roles of procurement, facilities, infection control and evaluation would be advantageous. An ability to work with stakeholders to tease out and identify measurable value through the deployment of green initiatives is another key requirement for the role. Strong programme management skills are essential as is the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver on target.

The successful candidate should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to secure clinical and operational engagement coupled with the ability to work with academia and industry. They will exhibit a demonstrable understanding of environmental sustainability and the NHS; an in depth understanding of programme/project management and improvement methodologies, with recognised expertise in practical application in a range of settings. The ability to work within a highly political agenda, manage to deadlines and respond to changing priorities is essential.
This is a hybrid role which will include both home working and travel across the country. Office space is available at NHS Golden Jubilee.
