The Job

NHS Fife Microbiology and Infection Control Department in Kirkcaldy, has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist  who is highly motivated, experienced and qualified in diagnostic microbiology. This is a permanent substantive post.

The Department

The department offers a full UKAS accredited scope of both microbiology and virology and has an extensive repertoire of molecular diagnostics.  We work closely with all laboratory service disciplines (including POCT). The department has integrated the pre-analytical processes with Blood Sciences and works closely with neighbouring Health Boards in Tayside to the North and Lothian to the South

Your base will be the in the North Laboratory on the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy site. You must be HCPC registered and be able to demonstrate ongoing CPD

The Role

You will provide direct supervision and management of Biomedical Scientists and Clinical Support Workers, and be responsible for the daily operation of specialist and/or automated sections of the laboratory. You will work individually as well as part of a team to analyse and validate a broad range of specialist and routine laboratory diagnostic investigations, using a range of automated systems and technical procedures.

The role requires interaction with users and with visitors to the department, involving training and supervision of placement students.

The Requirements

It is essential that you have a relevant Master of Science degree or demonstrable equivalent level of knowledge with current HCPC registration and significant post registration experience in Microbiology. Additional Virology experience would be an advantage. The successful candidate will have a contractual commitment to participate in shift working

Consideration will be given to candidates who have completed the Masters of Science Degree but have not been awarded the degree provided they have a letter of award from the supporting University prior to the agreed start date.

You will be expected to undertake the lead in additional roles from the following examples, IT Specialist, Virology/Serology, traditional/molecular Microbiology, and deputise in others from the following examples; Health and Safety, Quality, Training, Specimen Reception supervision, Stock and Equipment management, POCT liaison.

You will be required to deputise for BMS Managers as required.
