THE UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, MEDICAL SCIENCES & NUTRITION

INSTITUTE OF DENTISTRY

CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW IN ORAL MEDICINE/PERIODONTOLOGY

REF: DEN035R

An exciting opportunity has arisen at the Institute of Dentistry and the Cardiovascular and Diabetes Centre in the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition at the University of Aberdeen.
This Clinical Research Fellowship is supported by a British Heart Foundation Project Grant awarded to Dr Karolin Hijazi, Reader in Oral Medicine, and Professor Dana Dawson, Chair in Cardiovascular medicine in collaboration with Professor Marco Oggioni, Chair in Microbial Genetics at the University of Leicester. The project investigates the hypothesis that epigenetic phase variations regulate pathogenic phenotypes of oral bacteria driving bloodstream invasion, low-grade systemic inflammation and atherogenesis/plaque instability as potential contributor to acute myocardial infarction. The study will disclose a novel target for periodontitis interventions to curb its contribution as a risk factor for coronary artery disease.

Candidates at pre-doctoral or post-doctoral stage of their career will be considered for this Clinical Research Fellowship. For pre-doctoral candidates, this post will allow the development of research skills and generation of data which will ultimately lead to the submission of a PhD degree. Although research will form the major component of this post, participation in associated clinical duties, depending on the candidate’s clinical background, will be incorporated into the job plan. The Fellowship will be suitable for Dental Core Trainees and Specialty Trainees training in a number of relevant dental specialties, including Oral Medicine, Periodontology or Oral Surgery.

The Clinical Research Fellow in Oral Medicine/Periodontology will join an enthusiastic team of clinicians and clinical researchers at the Institute of Dentistry and the Cardiology Department, and benefit of the mentorship and support of senior colleagues involved in clinical research studies led by Dr Hijazi and Prof Dawson ongoing in these units.

The successful candidate will be appointed to point 2, on the Clinical Scale for Academics below the level of Consultant, which is currently £41,821 and will increment on an annual basis to the next point on the salary scale.
Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Karolin Hijazi, Reader and Institute of Dentistry Research Lead (k.hijazi@abdn.ac.uk).

Should you require a visa to undertake employment in the UK you will be required to fulfil the minimum points criteria to be granted a Certificate of Sponsorship under the requirements of the Skilled Worker visa.  At the time an offer of appointment is made, you will be asked to demonstrate that you fulfil the criteria in respect of qualification and competency in English. For research and academic posts, we will consider eligibility under the Global Talent visa. Please do not hesitate to contact Grant Rae, HR Adviser (grant.rae@abdn.ac.uk) for further information.
