The Glasgow Drug Court is a therapeutic court which supervises the treatment of offenders who commit crime to fund their drug habit. The court aims to break that cycle of addiction and offending.
The objectives of the Glasgow drug court are: -
• To reduce the level of drug related offending behaviour, and
• To reduce or eliminate an offender’s dependence on or propensity to misuse
drugs.
In order to achieve those objectives the drug court is supported by a specialist supervision and treatment team made up of social work staff, addiction specialists, a medical officer and a nurse team. This team ensures that the service user is given rapid access to treatment once a drug court order is made. The court as a whole is overseen by a multi-disciplinary management team, consisting of representatives of the key criminal justice and treatment agencies. The drug court team provides a statutory service to Glasgow Sheriff Drug Court and produce court reports, manage Community Payback Orders and Drug Treatment and Testing Orders. Given how the drug court operates staff are expected to produce monthly progress reports for court. The team only undertake statutory work. The Band 5 nursing post is critical to how the service operates and provides support for testing of individuals subject to DTTOs, in addition to addiction health support for each individual in terms of their drug treatment plans. The post holder is responsible for working with patients, carers and other professionals/ agencies in line with legislative frameworks, agreed standards and clinical policies. As an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team the post-holder will work in partnership demonstrating compassionate caring behaviours to fulfil the key functions of the Alcohol and Drug Recovery Service (ADRS). In particular the postholder will be responsible for the assessment, formulation, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care using a strength based recovery focused approach to care that proactively involves the person and optimises selfmanagement.
The post holder is required to be able to undertake duties without direct supervision as well as supporting and supervising work undertaken by junior members of staff and Healthcare Support Workers. The post holder is responsible for working with patients, carers and other professionals/ agencies in line with legislative frameworks, agreed standards and clinical policies. This role is predominantly office based however may require attendance at community locations and court.
Participating in regular Nurse Supervision and Nurse Line Management are important aspects of the role. Supervising the practice of others, undertaking mentorship/ preceptorship responsibilities and contributing to the learning and development of the staff team are important aspects of this role.
