The shift pattern for this post is ​​​​​​​37.5 hours over 5 days – Monday to Friday

The post holder will deliver on the operational aspects, management and on-going development of an effective Clinical Microbiology service for the Glasgow Royal Infirmary Microbiology Department. The post holder will function as the designated Line Manager for all departmental Healthcare Science staff. The role includes responsibility for: staffing rotas, work allocation, staff deployment, performance management, continuing professional development, KSF PDP (Turas), sickness absence, disciplinary and grievance issues and ensuring staff are aware of relevant policy changes.

The knowledge, experience and training requirements for the position are as follows:

  • State Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) is mandatory.
  • Healthcare Science Masters Degree (MSc) or F.I.B.M.S.Fellowship.
  • Extensive post State Registration experience, including experience as a senior Healthcare Scientist.
  • Management experience and knowledge appropriate to the post is required. This may be represented by a formal management qualification.
  • Specialised scientific/technical knowledge is required by the post holder to perform their duties effectively and to advise others.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development for example a portfolio of highly developed specialist knowledge, including management and service development.
  • Excellent communication, planning, organisational and interpersonal skills.

​​​​​​​The Diagnostic Clinical Microbiology Service for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is delivered from two sites: Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) and Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH). The laboratories provide a full and comprehensive Microbiology service to the population of Greater Glasgow & Clyde, hospital based users e.g. medical, nursing, estates, pharmacy and other department staff e.g. , users in Primary Care and General Practice.

The post is based at the Microbiology Laboratory at Glasgow Royal Infirmary which is a state of the art facility which contains extensive microbiology equipment such as Vitek-2, Vitek-MS, Virtuo Blood Culture analyser, WASP/WASPLab and MGiT TB analysers. The laboratory processes around 400,000 specimens per annum and in addition to routine microbiology sections, also includes Environmental (air and water) testing and a Mycology section. The laboratory holds UKAS accreditation for both the ISO 15189 and ISO 17025 standards.
