To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

Applications are invited for the role of Advanced Retrieval Practitioner (Training Post) at the ScotSTAR Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) West team, operated by the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS).

The EMRS provides a critical care patient transfer service for remote and rural Scotland and pre-hospital critical care for seriously injured patients at incident scenes. EMRS also supports the SAS in the provision of the medical response to major incidents.

The service undertakes primary and secondary retrievals on rotary and fixed wing aircraft operated by the SAS, by Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter and by fast response vehicle.

The posts are based at the ScotSTAR retrieval base at Glasgow Airport and are 37.5 hours per week plus on-call.

Advanced Retrieval Practitioners (ARP) work as part of a consultant-led team and form an integral part of the clinical team delivering advanced resuscitation, stabilisation and transfer of critically ill patients. In addition to this ARPs work within the Ambulance Control Centre (ACC) on the Critical Care Desk. This desk has a crucial role which includes identifying incidents of major trauma and and other incidents which would benefit from an enhanced clinical response. Each ARP also has non-clinical responsibilities to support and improve service delivery.

To meet the essential criteria for the post, applicants MUST be able to demonstrate extensive experience post adult nurse/paramedic registration with experience in emergency/intensive care services. Applicants that do not meet the essential criteria will not be shortlisted.

Applicants MUST be able to demonstrate experience in teaching and in improving the delivery of clinical care. The post also requires the successful candidate to be able to travel to Glasgow Airport base ideally within 30 minutes (although on-call accommodation is available if required).  Applicants MUST hold a C1 driving license and be able to complete HUET (helicopter underwater escape training) and blue light driver training.

The successful candidate will complete relevant post-graduate studies and upon successful completion will move to the role of Advanced Retrieval Practitioner.
