West of Scotland Breast Screening Programme
The WSBSP, based at Nelson Mandela Place in Glasgow City Centre, provides 3 yearly screening mammography to eligible women (population 270,000) residing within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Forth Valley catchment areas.
The aim of the West of Scotland Breast Screening Programme (WSBSP), is to provide an accessible quality service to women aged between 50 and 70, registered with a GP in our NHS Health Board areas.
The principal objective of the WSBSP, in line with the primary aim of the Scottish Breast Screening Programme, is to reduce mortality from breast cancer in the eligible population. This is achieved by offering 2 view digital mammographic screening on a 3 yearly basis, and by the provision of comprehensive assessment of women with indeterminate mammographic abnormalities and prompt onward referral to specialist breast multidisciplinary teams when necessary.
The eligible population of the WSBSP is approximately 310,000. This comprises 130,000 from NHSGGC and 120.000 from Lanarkshire 27,000 Forth Valley and 15.000 NHS Highland Health Board. Around 75% of screening is undertaken on mobile units, which visit 80 sites, over a 3 year cycle. We currently have 7 mobile units and the remainder of the screening takes place in our city centre clinics at Nelson Mandela Place.
This Clinical Nurse Specialist post will be based at Nelson Mandela Place. There would be no requirement to travel to the mobile units or acute hospital sites.
Four to five breast screening assessment clinics are held in the centre each week to review patients with an equivocal/suspicious screening examination. Approximately 200 women are diagnosed with breast cancer through the screening service annually.
A weekly multidisciplinary meeting is attended by representatives of all relevant specialties.
Breast team review meetings are held regularly to review and plan services. The multidisciplinary breast team supports the breast symptomatic services and the West Scotland Breast Screening Programme (SWSBSP). The acute breast services are based across three sectors within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde comprising 6 acute hospital sites and within our neighbouring Health Boards for which we perform screening as part of a service level agreement with the Health Boards and National Services Division. The acute services accept the onward referrals from breast screening for those women, resident within their catchment area, who require treatment for breast cancer.
