To provide Consultant level expert leadership for the Health Protection response across Lothian, as part of a department that provides a comprehensive public health function encompassing: population health, health protection, and health intelligence.  This post will sit in the Health Protection team and the post-holder will contribute to the health protection function in Lothian, as a competent person under the Public Health (Scotland) Act 2008 through participation in the Out of Hours on-call duty rota for the full range of health protection and specialist public health emergencies.

To work with colleagues across Scotland, as appropriate, to safeguard the population’s health through the development of public health strategies and policies for communicable disease, reduction of vaccine preventable disease, infection control and environmental health. The post holder will be responsible for agreed areas of work within the health protection agenda, including the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The role will require a high level of tact, diplomacy and ability to provide leadership on complex and contested areas of the health protection response.  The post holder will advise, challenge and advocate to enable effective working across organisational boundaries. The post holder will be a strong advocate for public health and reducing inequalities and able to contribute at Consultant level to the wider work of the department and profession at local and national level.

The Health Protection Team core hours are Monday to Friday 8.30-5pm. However due to COVID requirements, the service is moving towards a 7 day a week service between the hours of 8am and 8pm and you will be required to be available to work a shift pattern within these hours.
