Consultant Microbiologist

About the Organisation:
Public Health Scotland is a new organisation, launched on the 1st April 2020 with the formal status of a National Special Health Board employing around 1100 people, and with an annual budget of around £60 million, Public Health Scotland will provide authoritative information and services to support people and communities across Scotland. It will lead the national response to unforeseen health emergencies and will contribute to national and local government policy through its provision of robust data and intelligence.

The post: 
The Health Protection Directorate are seeking to appoint a 0.4 WTE Consultant Microbiologist on a fixed term basis until the 31st March 2023 in the first instance with the possibility of extension or becoming permanent.  The post will be based within the Public Health Microbiology Team within the Clinical Protecting Health Directorate of PHS. 

The candidate:
Working with the other consultants in the Public Health Microbiology team, the post holder will provide strategic leadership for the commissioning of national reference laboratory services for Scotland, working closely with Scottish Government, National Services Division, National Services Scotland and the microbiological community within Scotland and across the 4 Nations.  He/she will provide microbiological expertise and support to a range of Health Protection functions. The post holder will play a major part in the close working relationships between Protecting Health and microbiologists across Scotland especially on issues related to surveillance and emerging organisms.

Salary placement will start at the bottom point of the scale unless individuals have previous NHS experience.

Candidates must have current GMC registration at the time of applying.

Location and working pattern:
The post(s) will be based in Glasgow or Edinburgh (with potential for home working) and an expectation for some potential travel between the base and other PHS Offices.

Due to our national response to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic there will be an expectation for weekend and/or out of hours working.
