Return to Practice (February Cohort)
Has your NMC Registration lapsed? Do you wish to return to Nursing after a career break?
NHS Lothian and Robert Gordon University have joined together to welcome nurses and midwifes whose registration has lapsed to return to practice. Together we provide a short course which is fully funded.
This cohort is specifically for Adult, Mental Health, and Learning Disability nurses, and is designed to help prepare you to re-join the NMC register.

To be accepted you will need:-
- Evidence of previous NMC registration on part one of the register.
- Following successful interview undertake and complete all required pre-employment checks including PVG Clearance from Disclosure Scotland and Occupational Health screening for immunisations.
- Commitment to fulfil the programme and then remain within employment for a minimum of one year with NHS Lothian following successful completion of the programme.
- Be able to attend the academic/theory element of the course without interruption, i.e., holidays.
On successful entry you will: -
- complete a six-month course (no fees).
- Initially complete a seven-week theory block that has been created to both help prepare you for placement, and academic study.
- The theory will be provided both online and will have some face-to-face skills sessions.
- Clinical placement/employment will be arranged in a relevant area of your field of practice depending on vacancies within NHS Lothian. You will be paid as a band 4 employee for the duration of your course.
- Practice hours can be completed via a full time or part time route, and these hours will be negotiated depending on length of lapse of registration, previous experience, and time as a registered professional.
- You will be fully supported by both Robert Gordon’s University and NHS Lothian practice areas.
- On successful completion of the course permanent employment in a Band 5 role within NHS Lothian is guaranteed.
Applications will be subject to a stringent short-listing process and successful applicants will be subject to a values-based interview, this will take place virtually on Microsoft Teams. Please stipulate which field or speciality you wish to be considered for on your application form. i.e., Adult Nursing (Community), Midwifery etc.
