Field Epidemiology Team – Principal Healthcare Scientist

About the Organisation:
Public Health Scotland (PHS) wants to see a Scotland where everybody thrives - a Scotland where life expectancy improves and the difference in life expectancy between our poorest and wealthiest areas gets smaller.

PHS launched in April 2020 as a new organisation between the Scottish Government and Local Government, working in partnership, to provide leadership to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of the people of Scotland. It provides authoritative information and services to support people and communities across Scotland, leads the national response to un-foreseen health emergencies, and contributes to national and local government policy through its provision of robust data and intelligence.

The post:
An exciting and novel opportunity has arisen with the Clinical and Protecting Health Directorate of PHS, who are creating a Field Epidemiology Team.  The FET will provide a national service primarily to support NHS Boards, other partners and the national response to new infectious disease outbreaks.  These include SARS-CoV-2 variants or mutations but also a range of other pathogens and public health incidents including environmental or chemical incidents.

The post holder will provide epidemiological, microbiological, infectious disease and data science capacity and skills to aid and deliver incident and outbreak investigations of the highest quality.

The candidate:
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and be part of further development and delivery of the FET and will have advanced knowledge and experience of epidemiology, microbiology and infectious diseases.

Your strong data science and skills will be used to deliver incident and outbreak investigations of the highest quality, which you will be able to communicate clearly to stakeholders.

We are seeking a candidate with an enthusiastic approach with excellent planning and organisational skills, who can provide leadership to the work of the team.

Location and working pattern:
Edinburgh / Glasgow
37.5 hours per week
This post will be included in the out of hours rota
On occasion you may be asked to work flexibly with a 5 days over 7 pattern

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.

Salary placement will start at the bottom point of the scale unless individuals have previous NHS experience.

Benefits:
Our benefits package includes pension scheme, comprehensive range of work life balance policies, occupational health services, learning resource centres and discounted leisure, financial and shopping benefits

Further information:
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who has lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
