Applications are invited for the post of a Consultant Breast Surgeon based at Gartnavel General Hospital. The candidate would join an existing extensive multidisciplinary team who are dedicated to managing all aspects of symptomatic and screened breast disease. There is a well-established link with the Plastic Surgical Unit at the Canniesburn Unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The Surgical team have a well-established flexibility in the working environment to ensure the best outcomes for patients.

The candidate would be expected to assist in the development of Breast Surgery in the South sector of Glasgow and have a role in the Research aspirations of the department.

In addition to providing clinical services the successful candidate will be required to participate in the training and assessment of junior staff and to undertake the administrative duties required in a consultant job. All consultants are required to have an annual appraisal.

Surgical trainees, at all levels, rotate from the West of Scotland Deanery and are based at the Glasgow sites. Teaching of Undergraduate medical students, trainee surgeons and visiting surgeons from overseas is considered an integral part of the work of the Directorate.  It is anticipated that the appointee would contribute to the education of Surgeons in training. 

Applicants should have a broad surgical training and should have full GMC registration and eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register. 


The post holder will be based at Gartnavel General Hospital.

The Job Plan outlined below will include clinical commitments on the Gartnavel site and is indicative of the duties of the post. The exact detail of the duties of the post and the timetable will be discussed with the successful candidate and agreed in line with the needs of the service.

The post holder will be asked to be responsive to and commit to supporting the management of the wider colorectal patient group as a member of the consultant team. ​​​​​​​

The job is offered as a full-time post on a 10 PA basis but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. Up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional outpatient and/or procedure sessions or management activity.

Additional Non DCC (up to 2 PA’s in total – Inclusive of 1 core SPA plus 1 additional non DCC can be negotiated and agreed between the successful candidate and Management depending on the time required to support professional activities and the needs of the service.​​​​​​​

All newly qualified Consultants are initially offered a minimum of 1 Core Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) which includes CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning and management meetings. This will be reviewed within 6 months (or earlier if required) of appointment and revised upwards if additional responsibilities are agreed.
