West Lothian CAMHS team is situated in St John’s hospital, Livingston to the West of Edinburgh in the Central Belt of Scotland, making it easily commutable from many areas of Scotland.
We are located across two sites: outpatients in the district general hospital and Willowgrove Day Programme. St John’s is a busy district general hospital with an A&E and a number of specialist regional services in mental health including perinatal, REDU (eating disorders in patient unit), psychiatry for the deaf as well as specialist other services such as plastic surgery.
Like all of the Edinburgh and the Lothians CAMHS teams, the West Lothian Team clinicians have direct access to the Tier 4 Inpatient and Outpatient teams in order to increase level of support, access complexity in an intensive manner or manage risk that requires multi-professional involvement. West Lothian CAMHS also has a local Day Programme and so one of the attractions of this post is the ability to provide continuity of care to young people across Tier 3 and outpatient Tier 4. The CAMHS inpatient beds are regional at The Melville Unit, Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh. . This blended model of care allows the Consultant in West Lothian to provide care in a seamless manner across tier 3 and tier 4. We also provide a liaison service to A&E, and other departments in the hospital such as Paediatrics and Medical Admissions Unit. This is also supported by our Unscheduled Care Team.
In addition to the Consultant Psychiatrists, and as it is appropriate in a truly multidisciplinary team, the other senior clinicians who manage the team are a Lead Clinical Psychologist, Advanced Practitioner (nursing) and Occupational Therapist Team Lead. Overall, the team comprises of 9.4 WTE Nursing, 5.6 WTE Clinical Psychology, 4.8wte Occupational Therapy, 1wte Speech and Language therapy, 0.6wte clinical pharmacy, 1wte directorate assistant and admin team . The team has input from Speciality Doctors, 1.8 WTE and also as an excellent training post will have (when possible) a Higher Trainee and a Core Trainee.
The team serves a population of around 180,000. There are strong links with Social Work, Education, local GPs and the 3rd sector. Cases are routinely triaged by an experienced small group of clinicians and then prioritised appropriately. There is a weekly multidiscinary team meeting where the expertise of the team is used to manage cases. A number of therapies are provided with good evidence base from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Supportive Therapy, Pharmacotherapy and Family Work. Some clinicians have skills in disorder-based therapies such as Family Based Therapy for eating disorders. There are strong initiatives to reduce waiting times. The presentations of the children and young people vary from anxiety, depression, self-harm to eating disorders. Care and treatment plans are formulation based.
The West Lothian Team has been considered for many years a very good training placement for Core and Higher Trainees in Psychiatry. The team finally is well known for its friendly, supportive atmosphere proven by the substantial stability of staff group.
