Would you like to try something different? All the benefits of working in a University Hospital setting combined with an opportunity to experience remote and rural practice and Island life?
We are looking for Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologists to share the provision of Obstetrics and Gynaecology services in Shetland. Shetland is a small but extremely friendly Health Board serving a population of approximately 23,000. The principal hospital is the Gilbert Bain in Lerwick.
A comprehensive Gynaecological service and low to medium risk Obstetrics care has always been provided in Shetland. In order to maintain local services we are looking for Consultants who would like to work on a rota in Shetland, alongside working for a Health Board/Trust of your choice on a part-time basis in order to maintain skills and/or pursue sub-speciality interests. We would like successful candidates to undertake a minimum of 17 weeks clinical practice in Shetland, in 4 week blocks, with up to 13 weeks made up of pro rata annual leave, study leave and continuous professional development time, Global Health or sub speciality interest time which should be divided between Obstetrics and Gynaecology in a specialist centre.
You will provide a non-onerous on call commitment for Obstetrics, whilst working in Shetland. Remuneration will be commensurate with the Scottish Consultant Scale at 0.58WTE. In addition the post holder will have a reasonable training allowance to cover the cost to attend suitable courses and conferences. Travel to and from Shetland will be supported and accommodation available to you for each rotation.
Shetland has a birth rate of approximately 250 deliveries per year of which 50% are delivered in Shetland. In line with ‘Best Start’, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team with Midwives with extended practice skills. In addition there is support from the team of Consultant Anaesthetists and General Surgeons and resuscitation facilities. Elective caesarean sections are undertaken locally as is follow up for high risk women using tele-health. Exceptional emergency retrieval is by air ambulance to the Maternity Hospital in Aberdeen, with support from Scotstar (neonatal transport service) where required. We would wish to retain, on Island, as much Gynaecology and Obstetrics care as possible; although this can be tailored to the experience and sub-speciality interests of the individual post holders.
