Job Advert

Clinical Development Fellow in Older Adult Psychaitry

Greater Glasgow & Clyde

We are delighted to be able to offer this Clinical Development Fellow position as full-time post on a 40 hours per week basis in Older Adult Psychiatry. Applications will of course be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. The job will be primarily based in an Older Adults Community Mental Health Team (OA CMHT) within NHS GG&C. There is no on call commitment.   The post is offered for 6-24 months which can be either static within one CMHT and area or peripatetic as discussed and agreed with the applicant and the service. The posts will have a strong focus on training and development primarily within the field of Older Adult Psychiatry.

Older Adult Community Psychiatry teams review patients with a wide range of moderate to severe mental illnesses over the age of 65 years old.  This includes functional mental illness such as anxiety and depression, schizophrenia as well as organic presentations such as dementia assessment and the management of stress and distress symptoms. The post holder is expected to work in a holistic manner considering physical health issues and issues of consent and capacity. Working with families is an important part of the job.

Older Adult Psychiatry is very much a multidisciplinary team approach: both within the CMHT and out with– both in statutory and non-statutory services. There are therefore many opportunities to engage with professionals from other medical specialties such as Care of the Elderly, Neurology, Radiology, and the patients General Practitioner, in order to provide a high standard of patient care. Joint working with colleagues in Social Work is also integral and will allow the post holder to develop their experience and understanding of the role of Social Work.

All Older Adult Community Mental Health teams have Consultant Old Age Psychiatrists and other medical staff including specialty grade and junior doctors, a Nurse Team Lead, Community Mental Health Nursing Staff, Clinical Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Healthcare Support Workers, Post-diagnostic Support Workers for Dementia and Care Home Liaison Nursing Staff. Administrative support from valued team secretaries or medical secretaries will be in place. The team reviews patients in a variety of ways including at outpatient clinics, home visits (in the persons own home or care home) and virtually by telephone or Attend Anywhere.  The team will have regular MDT meetings to discuss new referrals, feedback assessments and discuss cases which particularly require an MDT approach.

Many of the CMHTs will run nurse led memory clinics where initial assessments will be conducted for patients presenting with primarily cognitive issues.  This may be followed by arranging appropriate neuro-imaging so that much valuable information is present for when the person then attends the medical outpatient clinic.

Across Greater Glasgow and Clyde there are locally based specialist Care Home Liaison nursing teams who visit patients within the care home setting and feedback to the MDT, arranging medical input as needed. This is a valuable service which the post holder will have the opportunity to work closely alongside. Greater Glasgow and Clyde also has a specialized and separate Acute Old Age Liaison service which is staffed by Consultant Old Age Psychiatrists, Nursing Staff and Psychology.
