Fixed Term Appointment – 3yrs                                 


The Acute Services Team is seeking to recruit a Clinical Director for Surgery within the emergency care and inpatients team. Working with the Acute Services Management Team and fellow medical leaders, to provide clinical director leadership for general surgery, orthopaedics / trauma and urology.

The Clinical Director will also be a member of a wider system Medical Leadership groupThe Medical Leadership group will meet regularly and influence decision making for NHS Forth Valley, undertake prioritisation and assist in delivering the key strategic and operational priorities.  The Medical Leadership group will also have opportunities for learning and peer support.


The Clinical Director role is an opportunity to improve the quality of care for patients both in the surgical sphere and across the wider whole system.  The Clinical Director will, where required, be supported to further develop their leadership skills.


The Clinical Director role requires:


  • Understanding what excellence looks like in your services, communicating that vision and guiding improvement towards it, in conjunction with the wider management team
  • Understanding, and working to, the “Triple Aim” of improved health of the population, improved effectiveness of our treatments and the importance of cost-effective and sustainable healthcare
  • Valuing and supporting your team to be resilient and engaged
  • Taking responsibility for effective clinical governance and quality improvement arrangements within your areas
  • Taking responsibility for efficient and effective delivery of service performance targets within your areas
  • Taking responsibility for high quality job planning
  • Working as a key team member with an understanding of the complexities of the wider organisation


Each Clinical Director will have three sessions, one of which will be from SPA allocation and two from DCC sessions.
