Technical Manager (Health Care Science) in Virology provide specialist services and are responsible for the performance of scientific procedures used for screening purposes and in the investigation and diagnosis of viral infection.
The main purpose of the role includes:
• Providing a high quality diagnostic service to users and patients by performing and ensuring staff perform a range of virology specialist activities used in the diagnosis of infection and determination of appropriate anti-infective therapy.
• Managing a group of staff composed of senior, specialist, registered, and trainee healthcare scientists, clinical support workers and secretarial staff.
• Training and overseeing the training of staff within the sub-division. This will include staff listed above and others such as junior doctors, control of infection nurses etc.
• Responsibility for equipment selection and maintenance etc
The post is a fixed term post until 31st March 2024 and is based at the Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) Service located within the West of Scotland Specialist Virology Centre (WoSSVC) at Glasgow Royal Infirmary which is a state of the art facility which contains extensive analysers such as Abbott Alinitiy-i and Alinity-m systems, Roche 6800 and FLOW extraction and PCR set up systems, which are interfaced with the Laboratory Information Management System. The post holder has the responsibility to maintain and troubleshoot equipment failure at the highest skill level in order to provide continuous service provision.
Applicants must be registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist and require a Masters degree (MSc) in Biomedical Science or hold the Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science (F.I.B.M.S.) or have an equivalent educational qualification. Secondment for this position will be considered.
WoSSVC operates an out of hours 24/7 operational service and the post holder will have a contractual requirement to participate in the rota for the out of hours’ service. This involves working 37.5 hours over 7 days, with hours worked at evenings, weekends and public holidays, Monday to Sunday as part of the out of hours rota.
