Who We Are

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is the national health board with statutory responsibilities to effect sustainable change through workforce development, education and training across the health and social care system in Scotland, while working at UK level with partner organisations.

What you'll do

An exciting opportunity has arisen to shape the future of optometry in Scotland. Following the introduction of new education and training requirements by the General Optical Council, the Scottish Government has commissioned NES to partner with the two Schools of Optometry in Scotland, to support the development of a new placement delivery model for optometry trainees.

To support this, the NES optometry team are expanding, seeking a Senior Specialist Lead to provide strategic leadership, planning, co-ordination and support for the development and enhancement of education and training within the workstream.

The post holder will contribute to the design, development, and implementation of an innovative new placement delivery model for optometry trainees in Scotland, playing a crucial role in the educational development of a sustainable, engaged, and adaptive optometry workforce across Scotland at a time of significant change.

Key tasks will include but will not be limited to:

  1. Work in partnership with the Head of Programme and colleagues from across NES, providing subject matter expertise and guidance.
  2. Support the design, development, and implementation of the key priorities in the delivery of a new placement delivery model for optometry trainees in Scotland.
  3. Lead the development of a range of activities across the workstream including placement facilitation, education and training development, national and work-based assessment processes and quality assurance and educational governance.
  4. Maintain and enhance effective links with key stakeholders, to support wider NES activity.
  5. Contribute to workstream planning.

What you'll bring

These will include but are not restricted to;

  • Postholder must be a registered member of the General Optical Council
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience of working in an educationally or knowledge management focused environment
  • Substantial postgraduate experience and will have held enhanced responsibility in an educational or healthcare post
