Principal Engineer - SQL Server DBA

About the Organisation: 
As a vital part of NHS Scotland, NHS National Services Scotland’s (NSS) mission is to enable and support the delivery of better health and better care, working in partnership. We do this by providing a range of specialised support services that enable NHS Boards to focus their efforts on delivering health improvement and patient care.

The Post: 
As part of the Digital and Security (DaS) Strategic Business Unit supporting NSS and the wider NHS, Health Boards, Scottish Government and other Public Services across Scotland, DaS Infrastructure are looking to recruit a Principal Engineer to join the Microsoft Server Team. 

This expansion is due to addition workloads within the server team caused by new demand, COVID response, security enhancements, and an increasing demand for digital services to provide services to our customers throughout Scotland. 

Responsibilities 

  • Maintain, manage, administer, and improve NSS’s SQL infrastructure.
  • Review, scope, document, and implement new SQL demand.
  • Technical leadership in architecture, development and deployment of primarily Microsoft SQL based solutions.
  • Liaise with the business and 3rd parties to design, document, and implement SQL solutions. 
  • Develop IP, best practices and knowledge assets to be re-usable and shared across NSS community.
  • Work with server team members to resolve high-level ‘non-SQL’ (eg Windows Server / Active Directory) issues.
  • Actively contribute to a culture of high performance, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Work with the Oracle DBA team on day to day issues and new demand when required.

The Candidate:
Education and Experience

  • Hands on experience in developing and deploying enterprise solutions, with Microsoft technology stack preferred.
  • Hands on experience in designing and deploying solutions on primarily Microsoft platforms.
  • Experience with public cloud platforms, including design and implementation.
  • Azure SQL Experience.
  • Appropriate certifications in Microsoft and associated technologies (desirable).
  • Hands on Experience in Oracle DBA platforms (desirable).
  • Microsoft Active Directory administration experience (desirable).

General Requirements

  • Strong experience with Microsoft services (eg Windows Server / Active Directory / SQL) including understanding their capabilities and limitations and being able to architect and deliver solutions leveraging various platform services.
  • Experienced in solutions architecture, scoping business requirements, and implementation of Microsoft SQL solutions.
  • Microsoft Azure SQL solutions management and implementation experience.
  • Knowledge of working within specific toolsets (desirable):

- CommVault (backup)
- Nimble (Storage)
- Oracle (DBA)
- VMWare (Virtual Infrastructure)

Location and Working Pattern:
Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Meridian Court, Glasgow.

However, it should be noted that NSS is currently in the process of relocating from Meridian Court to nearby Delta House, 50 West Nile Street Glasgow G1 2NP. 

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with NSS.
