Job Title: Clinical Fellow in Renal  Transplant Surgery

Base: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Renal transplantation and renal failure surgery, based in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Glasgow. The post is for 6 months in the first instance and extendable depending on performance. The post involves clinical work within the West of Scotland Renal Transplant Unit and one of Europe’s busiest renal failure surgical services. The posts will involve support of the (currently 1 in 6, 24 hour partial shift) on-call rota, elective surgery MDT and clinic duty which will also include the departmental general surgical activity.

The appointee will participate with middle grade colleagues in the pre-operative assessment and preparation, surgical management and post operative care of patients with renal failure. This includes attendance at outpatient clinics, ward rounds, a day surgery list as well as elective and emergency operating sessions. This clinical activity will account for an average of 2 sessions a week. There is a maximum 1 in 6 on call commitment. The unit does not have Foundation Year doctors and all the routine ward care of the patients is undertaken by Nurse Practitioners during working hours, who refer to the middle grade doctors for diagnostic and treatment decisions, and by the middle grade doctors out of hours.

During term time there is a regular commitment to the undergraduate medical course particularly in ward teaching. There is a commitment to the postgraduate education of the trainees within the renal department.

There is an active clinical research activity associated with this large and busy transplantation programme and the appointee will be expected to contribute to this.
