To provide a comprehensive service of assessment, diagnosis, treatment/appropriate management, provision of custom made medical devices to patients with amputation/s or congenital limb loss who require life long care, in a clinical environment.
To supervise and support Prosthetics students.
AFC Band 5 salary range £30, 229 - £37, 664 (based on experience)
WTE 37.5 Hours per week.
1 x 12 month Fixed term post
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high quality prosthetics care to patients with amputation/s or congenital limb loss, in a clinical environment. This service should be patient centered and ensure clinical and cost effectiveness
The successful candidate will do this by:
• Assessing patients’ prosthetic needs and, either alone or in collaboration with other members of the multi-disciplinary clinic team, maintain/prescribe and provide prosthetic devices required to meet these needs.
• Supervise the manufacture and procurement of prosthetic devices prescribed
• Undertake basic technical manufacturing tasks
• Review patients’ prosthetic requirements to ensure the effectiveness and safety of devices provided.
This candidate will be supported by our Senior Prosthetists and Team Leads as required.
We require an individual with good interpersonal and communication skills who can demonstrate that they can work well independantly and as part of a team.
Must be registered with HCPC.
The SMART Centre is one of 5 centres in Scotland (Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and Inverness) providing Rehabilitation Technology Services and covers Lothian, Fife and the Borders (approx. 25% of Scotland’s population). These include Mobility and Postural Services (wheelchairs and special seating), Prosthetics, Orthotics, Bioengineering Services, a Disabled Living Centre and Gait Analysis Service. We are also one of two Centres in Scotland providing a national Specialist Prosthetics Service and we also provide a national Driving Assessment Service and Spinal Orthotics Service.
SMART is part of the Rehabilitation Service of the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership. The department has its own specialist workshops and stores on site. SMART workshops provide in-house manufacturing and (outsourced) modified medical devices across the range of activities mentioned above.
The Prosthetics service consists of the Head of Prosthetics and Orthotics Services, Prosthetics Team Lead, 6.3 (wte) Prosthetists. We currently have 3 in-house prosthetic technicians as well as 2 Modern Apprentice Orthotics and Prosthetics Technicians. We are currently using external companies to support some of our manufacture due to vacancies in our technical team.
We aim to deliver high quality patient centred care as part of a multidisciplinary team.
The successful applicants will be conducting a mixture of face to face and telephone/Near Me clinics, and will be supported by Senior Prosthetists.
Whilst experience in prosthetics would be beneficial, we would welcome applications from recent graduates.
This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/ record. If the post holder is not a current PVG member for the required regulatory group (i.e. child and/or adult) then an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before they can begin in post.
