An opportunity has arisen for the Lead Clinical Scientist post within Assistive Technology at the SMART (Southeast Mobility and Rehabilitation Technology) Centre, Astley Ainslie Hospital, Edinburgh specifically working in the Wheelchair and Seating Service. The SMART Centre (www.smart.scot.nhs.uk) provides highly specialised clinical rehabilitation technology services across the southeast of Scotland.

The post holder will have professional and managerial responsibility for the part of the Clinical Scientist Team including clinical and professional governance issues, and staff training and development and performance management. They will be responsible for maximising service provision, including the delivery of safe and effective clinical practice, ensuring that all local and national guidelines and targets are adhered to and met.

The post holder will undertake advanced clinical assessments of patients with complex disabilities within area of expertise. They will design, risk assess and prescribe rehabilitation and assistive technology equipment that is procured from external manufacturers and/or adapted or manufactured in the service’s workshops.

The post holder will provide expert advice, opinions, training to own and other professions, and undertake service development and innovation activities in their specialist area. They will undertake specification, procurement and commissioning of diagnostic and assessment equipment.

The post holder will be the clinical and scientific lead for the Custom Adaptions of Wheelchair & Seating.
