An opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Clinical Scientist within Assistive Technology at the SMART (Southeast Mobility and Rehabilitation Technology) Centre, Astley Ainslie Hospital, Edinburgh. The SMART Centre (www.smart.scot.nhs.uk) provides highly specialised clinical rehabilitation technology services across the southeast of Scotland.

The post-holder will undertake on-the-job training to achieve registration with the Health & Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist specialising in Rehabilitation Engineering. The training programme undertaken will be depend on their existing qualifications and experience. The service will contribute to travel and other expenses to undertake training out with the Lothian area. The successful applicant will, however, need to pay the fees and the costs of applying for and maintaining their registration. Once registered the post-holder can expect to be deployed within the Wheelchair & Seating Service as a Senior Clinical Scientist though this will be subject to the needs of the services at that time and they may also be required to work across one of the other services (Custom Design Service, Environmental Control or Gait Analysis).

During their training the post-holder, will, under supervision and within the limits of their knowledge and skills, undertake clinical assessment of complex cases in the field of assistive technology including patient assessment, data collection and analysis and use of specialist engineering systems to enable design, development and provision of innovative engineering solutions/medical devices to meet the needs of patients with multiple and complex physical and neurological conditions. The post-holder will be required to be flexible in their approach, adaptable to service and training requirements and to contribute to the day-to-day operation of services. Training will be across all Assistive Technology services but with a focus on the Wheelchair & Seating Service.
