Job Advert

Applications are invited for a Consultant post in Colorectal Surgery with an interest in Endometriosis based at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QUEH)

This post is to provide a Colorectal service to support the new West of Scotland BSGE Accredited Endometriosis Centre.  It is expected that he/she will attend complex surgery involving the bowel and operate with the centre’s gynaecologists.  The partnership will allow patients to receive the best advice, surgery and follow up where the pathology extends to the bowel. This investment will enable provision of a structured service with dedicated resource. This differs from the current situation in which the service is provided on several sites. The surgery is complex, usually requiring the assistance of a colorectal surgeon, hence scheduling on an ad hoc basis is challenging and can impinge on waiting times.

There are currently no sessions included in any colorectal job plans to support endometriosis. Historically, the on call general surgeon would assist if able.  This arrangement has proven to be unsustainable given the volume of acute receiving work and cases have been arranged on a grace and favour basis for the past 5 years.

Colorectal Surgery is a critical linkage for moderate and severe endometriosis.  Patients being considered for surgery will require diagnostic work-up which will include MRI or CT, colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. Current arrangements for colorectal support are based upon historical and informal arrangements across sites on an ad-hoc basis and do not feature as part of formal job plan.

The new appointee will join a team of Consultants dedicated to providing all aspects of Colorectal Surgery. The appointee will have a role in providing elective General Surgical Services and managing Acute Surgical Emergencies. The candidate will be expected to assist in the development of Colorectal Surgery in the QEUH and have a role in the Research aspirations of the department

In addition to providing clinical services the successful candidate will be required to participate in the training and assessment of junior staff and to undertake the administrative duties required in a consultant job. All consultants are required to have an annual appraisal.

Surgical trainees, at all levels, rotate from the West of Scotland Deanery and are based at the sites. Teaching of Undergraduate medical students, trainee surgeons and visiting surgeons from overseas is considered an integral part of the work of the Directorate.  It is anticipated that the appointee would contribute to the education of Surgeons in training.

Emergency Surgery for the post is based at the with clinics and elective surgery split between there and the .  Fully staffed Intensive Care and High dependency beds are available on the QEUH site.  Clinical Nurse Specialists are valued members of the teams.

Applicants should have a broad surgical training and should have full GMC registration and eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register.  trainees will have evidence of Higher Specialist Training leading to CCT, or be six months of confirmed entry from the date of interview.  Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
