We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who is keen to learn how to promote safe, efficient, and cost-effective medicines management within NHS Orkney, as part of the pharmacy team.

Our Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician will undertake a 2-year distance learning training programme under the supervision, and with the support and mentorship, of our existing team of experienced primary and secondary care clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. This training programme will support you in attaining your SVQ in Pharmacy Service at level 8 and a Professional Development Award in Pharmacy Services at level 7, which together equal a Diploma in Pharmacy Services.

On completion of the programme, you will be eligible to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Pharmacy Technician and progress into a range of opportunities within the profession.

As a pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician, you will primarily be based primary care general practice pharmacy, but you will also gain experience of community pharmacy and hospital pharmacy. This should offer the opportunity to learn key skills such as:

•           Shadowing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working in general practice

•           Visiting patients in their own homes or in care homes to help them or their carers to manage their medicines safely

•           Undertake audits and sustainability work

•           Understanding and using Standard Operating Procedures and risk management processes

•           Stock supplies of medicines to mainland Orkney and beyond to our outer isles

•           Dispensing prescriptions an understanding the different types of prescriptions

This is an exciting, developmental post offering a unique working environment with a friendly and enthusiastic team in a stunning remote and rural setting. You will work with general practice, hospital, and managed service staff to ensure prescribing is safe, effective, and efficient by becoming an integral member of the Primary Care multidisciplinary teams.

- National 5 qualifications at Grade A to C (or equivalent SCQF Level) in Chemistry, Biology, Maths and English/ESOL

Or

- completion of the Access to Pharmacy Services (SCQF level 5), NC in Pharmacy Services or NC in Applied Sciences

We are looking for diligent, enthusiastic individuals committed to improving patient care. Commitment to the completion of the required study is essential and you will require excellent organisational skills to balance the on-the-job requirements and academic aspects of this post.
