An exciting and rare opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, highly motivated HCPC-registered Principal Clinical Scientist to join the Scottish Microbiology Laboratories (SMiRL) at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
The post holder will provide expert clinical and technical support relating to all specialist testing, surveillance and outbreak services, and will be a key member of the SMiRL service development team. This includes methodology such as Whole Genome Sequencing, Sanger-based sequencing, real-time PCR, AMR testing and serology. The post holder will have responsibility for instigating, developing and implementing policies and interpretive guidelines, and will spend a significant proportion of their time undertaking formal research and development projects, and clinical audits across all SMiRL services.
The post holder will independently discuss, and provide specialist advice to Healthcare Professionals, including senior medical staff in both primary and secondary care and Public Health Scotland (PHS). They will advise on treatment choices, support pathogen surveillance, and manage the investigation of outbreaks and transmission events.
The SMiRL (Glasgow) plays a key role in the provision of specialist and reference testing for a wide range of pathogens, as well as supporting clinical decisions, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, vaccine surveillance, public health policy formulation, and outbreak management for the Scottish population. SMiRL actively participates in internal and external training and education, collaborative research and development, and has a close working relationship with Public Health Scotland (PHS) and other stakeholders responsible for human and animal health in Scotland.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic with proven knowledge and skills across Clinical Microbiology. This roles involves gaining expertise across all the SMiRL (Glasgow) services whilst providing the successful candidate with the opportunity to develop a special interest in a specific area of the services. This demanding role will involve having to manage and lead on multiple tasks, problem solve and provide clinical advice to a wide range of users across Scotland. The candidate will be expected to have excellent verbal and written communication skills involving tact and diplomacy to engage with healthcare scientists and stakeholders at a national and international level. The post holder will be supported to develop highly specialised clinical expertise to prepare them for consultant level posts.
Applicants require:
- Upper second or first class Honours degree in relevant science for example Clinical/Medical Microbiology or appropriate qualification
- Completion of the nationally accredited Clinical Scientist training programme, or equivalent experience
- PhD or equivalent knowledge and experience in Microbiology or a relevant field
- FRC Path Part 1 exam in Medical Microbiology or equivalent experience of Clinical Microbiology (full support will be given for preparation for FRC Path Part 1 examination, as required)
- Clinical Scientist State Registration with the Health Professions Council. Individuals who have submitted completed portfolios at the time of application will also be considered for this role
The post holder will be required to perform their duties working 37.5 hours over 5 days, Monday to Friday. There is no requirement for evening or weekend work for this post.
