Job Advert
The IMTF in Glaucoma temporarily replaces an existing senior training opportunity within the West of Scotland’s postgraduate programme for ophthalmology.
We are looking to appoint for 6 months (Aug 20-Feb 21) in the first instance, with a view to extending to 12 months by mutual consent.
The training programme and the clinical service in glaucoma encompass all the general hospitals in the West of Scotland. Ophthalmic in-patient services are at Gartnavel General Hospital; out-patient services are there, and also at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, the New Victoria Hospital, Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock. The glaucoma team also covers paediatric glaucomas at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.
The Glaucoma service is a tertiary referral service, in that it accepts referrals for a wide variety of types of glaucoma from consultant ophthalmologists across the region. The population served is around 1.5 million, so all the rarer and hereditary types of glaucoma are represented.
The consultants who will supervise the IMTF are Dr Sidiki, Dr Montgomery, Dr Rahman and Dr Rotchford; and Dr Chia works with them part-time. In addition there are other consultants in the region who have a special interest in glaucoma, including Dr Prem Venkatesh at Inverclyde Royal and Dr Ken Lai at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
The eye ward (ward 1c at Gartnavel General Hospital) has about 20 beds and is staffed by experienced ophthalmic nurses. Clinics are equipped with appropriate visual fields machines and suitable lasers. Surgery includes trabeculectomies, deep sclerectomies, and implantation of Ahmed or Baervaldt tubes.
The IMTF will be able to contribute to the second on-call rota for ophthalmology (about 1:12): that will provide a welcome opportunity to keep abreast of general ophthalmic emergencies.
