Job Advert

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

Clyde Sector is seeking to develop its Internal Medicine department by recruiting passionate, motivated and highly skilled Physicians with an interest in Renal Medicine to diversify the existing specialty skill mix and establish Renal as a new sub-specialty. Participation in GIM on call and with in-patient care will form part of the role, with ongoing strong links with the Glasgow Renal and Transplant Unit. While the outline below specifies base hospitals, it may be possible, dependent on the successful candidates’ preferences to develop a multi-site team approach which could allow greater flexibility for providing in-patient services.

Inverclyde Royal Hospital (IRH)

IRH is a DGH serving 125,000 population located in Greenock, just 45 minutes from the centre of Glasgow. It has recently been classed in the top 2% nationwide for Internal Medicine training. It currently includes in-patient medical subspecialties of acute medicine, cardiology, diabetes and endocrinology, respiratory and rheumatology. The Inverclyde Renal Dialysis unit cares for 64 haemodialysis patients and there is a weekly Renal Clinic at IRH including low clearance and transplant follow up patients. The IRH is seeking 2 physicians with an interest in renal medicine from August 2025. There will be a 60:40 split of GIM: renal medicine. The 2 successful candidates would share an in-patient ward cover slot on the renal unit (7 weeks each per year).

The GIM component includes:

  • Participation in the GIM acute receiving rota, 1:13 frequency, including weekends
  • In-patient beds for ongoing GIM within IRH
  • Participation in site governance and trainee supervision, including undergraduates.
  • The renal component includes a team approach includes:

Renal clinics

  • Renal ward consults within Clyde
  • Renal ward cover at the QEUH - 7 weeks per year
  • Regional Friday PM meeting as part of core SPA
  • The post would be based on an 8:2 split of DCC: SPA, with 0.5 SPA earmarked for educational supervision and 0.5PA flexible dependent on the candidate’s interest/development needs.
  • Condensed hours working would be considered.

The appointed candidates will join a well-established and friendly Clyde sector medical team supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team including junior medical grade staff, enthusiastic team of Specialist Nurses and support staff all committed to improving the patient pathway to promote and deliver high standards of patient care, outcomes, experience, safety and quality of our patients.
