Job Advert

NHS Tayside have a vacancy for a Consultant post Dundee HSCP Medicine for the Elderly with interest in Surgical Frailty and Orthogeriatrics. Applications are invited for an MFE Consultant post to join the Medicine for the Elderly Team in Dundee. The opportunity has arisen via a senior Consultant retirement

Dundee has a diverse geriatric model covering hospital services from an Acute Frailty Team and Acute Medicine for the Elderly Unit (AME Unit) as a separate ward in the Medical Admission Unit of Ninewells hospital, a 44 bedded geriatric assessment and rehabilitation unit in Ninewells Hospital. Out with the acute hospital we have flourishing community care models with Royal Victoria Hospital the centre for step-down rehabilitation and Dundee stroke rehabilitation and one of Scotland’s largest intermediate care facilities in the Bluebell Unit. We have a strong community presence and support Enhanced Community Support (ECS) with regular GP practise based MDT meetings supported by the designated locality consultant, polypharmacy initiatives and a newly developed Dundee Enhanced Community Support rapid Assessment (DECSA) model which is more aligned to hospital at home. Candidates have the potential to work in any part of service that they may have a specific interest in

At the heart of our model is locality working where the team concentrate on the care of older people in one of the four specific Dundee localities or GP clusters. This delivers population continuity of care across in-patient and the community so as an MFE consultant you are enabled to manage the care of the same frail person in the community, at outpatients and while an in-patient throughout an older persons life. It is a very holistic and rewarding model to work in

The priority to Medicine for NHST Operational Unit and the Medicine for the Elderly service for the next 24-48 months is to develop and deliver a Peri-operative care of Older People potentially undergoing Surgery model (POPS) to TAYIDE population. Currently there is an innovative surgical acute frailty service in place to support surgical emergency admissions and orthogeriatric service. These two services are both led by senior and highly competent speciality doctors and advanced nurse practitioners, but now TAYSIDE is ready for MFE consultant to bring these teams together and introduce surgical elective pathway support. This post holder will have the opportunity to deliver a service that is not just aimed at delivering clinical care to TAYSIDE people but also become a key local and national training environment for MFE, surgical and anaesthetic trainees

The Medicine for the Elderly team has a strong consultant group with no unfilled posts. , The Dundee Health and Social Care Partnership due and NHS Tayside have an ambitious Strategy for Older People which demonstrates commitment to this p[population. We are supported by a great team of career grade doctors, as well as 9 MFE Advanced Nurse Practitioners and two nurse consultants. This level of support allows each consultant to function at the senior level we aspire to and lead in care delivery to our respective populations, without necessarily having to individually deliver all the vast amount of care needed

The consultant post will be tailored to an applicant’s needs, and areas of specialist interest.  Candidates can work full-time or part-time. Weekend and evening working is available, as is out of hours. These can be optional. We are truly flexible
