LOCUM SPECIALTY DOCTOR IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE (to cover maternity leave from August 5th 2020 – February 3rd 2021)

 

An opportunity has arisen for a Specialty Doctor to join our team to provide maternity cover. You will support the provision of high quality patient care within the Emergency Department. The post is aimed at clinicians with 4 years post registration who wish to continue to broaden their clinical experience and training in Emergency Medicine.

 

The Specialty Doctor will work alongside Specialty trainees in Emergency Medicine from the South East Scotland training rotation.  The Successful applicant will work at a middle grade level on a rota which provides 24 hour middle grade cover for the department under consultant supervision. The rota will include overnight and weekend work.

 

The post attracts 10 PAs of which 9 will be Direct Clinical Care and 1 will be for ongoing Continuing Professional Development. These PAs can be used flexibly for ongoing training and development. Development and maintenance of a portfolio is essential.

 

Specialty doctors are involved in the initial assessment and management of patients attending the emergency department, and in supervising and supporting FY2s and GPSTs in patient management. This will involve work in all areas of the department. There will be opportunities to develop experience of observational medicine under consultant supervision and to take part in Observation ward rounds.

 

The department includes an 8 bay resuscitation area, a 9 bay majors area, a 6 bay minors area and 2 paediatric consulting rooms. There is a dedicated Procedures room and a 6 bedded Emergency Medicine Observation Unit which admits primarily toxicology and head injury patients. There is access to electronic pathology and radiology ordering. Departmental guidelines, protocols and rotas are on the departmental intranet web pages. We perform well in key areas such as sepsis, stroke thrombolysis and compliance woth the 4 hour target.

 

The Emergency Department has 24 hour senior doctor presence, (13 Consultant Emergency physicians 10.4 WTE) with current shop floor consultant presence daily from 0800 to 2300. We have 5 GPwSI who deliver regular sessions in evenings and at weekends. There are daily ENP sessions to help with the minors flow.

 

There is a co-located GP OOH service in the evenings and at weekends, allowing redirection of appropriate patients. A formal redirection policy is in operation.

 

There is a 24 hour ENP-led Minor Injuries Unit Located at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline which is clinically supported by the senior doctors in the Emergency Department.
