Job Advert

Clinical Fellow in General Surgery

An exciting opportunity for candidates looking to consolidate their experience in General Surgery prior to progressing to specialty training.

The department of general surgery at Hairmyres is among the highest rated units for general surgical training in the west of Scotland (GMC Survey 2018).

It has excellent education feedback at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. Hairmyres has also demonstrated success in supporting junior staff toward application for surgical training programs and examinations.

Fellows will work as part of the junior middle grade rota with support from the departmental F1 doctors, senior middle grades, and consultants. The clinical responsibilities of the fellows will mirror those of existing junior middle grade trainees. Fellows will gain considerable emergency and elective general surgery experience in a very busy department.

Successful candidates will participate on a 10 person emergency receiving rota for general surgery.

The department of general surgery presently has 9 consultants performing a wide range of laparoscopic and open procedures. It performs a large volume of endoscopy including advanced therapeutic procedures and emergency gastroscopy for upper GI bleeds. There are 3 upper GI consultants, 5 colorectal consultants and 1 locum general surgeon. The successful candidate would also cover vascular surgery, with senior vascular specific support, when on-call.

Clinical fellows will be supported to participate in audit/research projects and encouraged to deliver teaching to medical undergraduates from the University of Glasgow and appropriate post-graduate groups.

A recognised qualification in medical education and evidence of commitment to medical education would be desirable for this post.

Candidates will be expected to be able to demonstrate completion of core surgical training (CREST) and success at the MRCS examination.
