The role:

Post: Oral Health Improvement – Health Care Support Worker (HCSW)

The post holder will participate in the administration and delivery of Childsmile and oral health improvement programmes e.g. tooth brushing within school settings. The post holder will work under the direction and supervision of a team leader to provide individual interventions, which have been identified through a structured care plan. To develop and maintain good oral health, these interventions are designed to support families and individuals with identified risks.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

Permanent, Full time

Location: Various sites across NHSGGC

Hours: 4 posts x 20hours (10.00am – 2.00pm) (Monday-Friday)

Please note that salary is Pro-Rata for part-time roles.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of Childsmile programmes e.g. toothbrushing, and fluoride varnish in schools
  • To support Oral Health Improvement Teams (OHIT) to deliver oral health messages in a variety of settings, through community engagement. Activities routinely include signposting parents to groups, demonstrating tooth brushing techniques to parent/ carers and visiting schools and nurseries
  • The ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary/ agency team
  • Good organisational skills and an ability to carry out assigned client care and tasks effectively within a busy environment
  • Effective written and verbal communication


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • SVQ 3 in Health Care, or working towards, or equivalent experience working with a caring environment/role
  • The post holder will be expected to undertake continuous professional development, including regular Childsmile training updates
  • The post holder will be expected to undertake NHSGGC mandatory and statutory training
  • The post holder must have a full clean driving license and ability to drive throughout NHSGGC
