NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the UK’s largest provider of acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services. With a total budget of £3.2 billion and a workforce of around 39,000 staff it serves an immediate population of 1.2 million plus provides specialist regional services to more than half of Scotland’s population. The geographical area covered is diverse; from the major city of Glasgow, large and small towns, villages and some rural districts; and encompasses 6 local authority areas from East Dunbartonshire to Inverclyde.


Our Acute Services are delivered currently from three Sectors covering North Glasgow, South Glasgow and Clyde and three Directorates with cross site responsibilities covering Women and Children's Services, Regional Services and Diagnostics and Imaging. Inpatient and outpatient Acute and Medicine for the Elderly services are delivered across 9 sites which include Acute teaching hospitals. This post is based in Clyde Sector.


Our recently approved ‘Moving Forward Together’ Blueprint will develop and deliver health and care services to meet the current and future needs of our population and will enable a clear plan for change to be taken forward making the Scottish Government’s vision for health and social care a reality. It is an exciting time for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde as we embark on this transformational change programme with a focus on integration, prevention and self management and the development of clinical networks across hospitals and into the community.


We are now seeking to appoint, on a permanent basis, a Consultant in Geriatric Medicine with expertise in Orthogeriatrics. This is based within a specialist Older People and Stroke Unit at the Inverclyde Royal Hospital (IRH) Greenock. IRH provides a full range of District General Hospital Specialties with excellent support facilities. We also have a major commitment to education and close links with Glasgow University and there is an active undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme.


We are seeking a highly motivated, innovative, experienced and enthusiastic consultant to join a well established and friendly Older People and Stroke Service, providing acute assessment and rehabilitation across the Inverclyde area which comprises both urban and rural populations. This post provides an exciting opportunity to deliver and develop Older Peoples Services within an expert multi-disciplinary team.


Within this role you will be one of a team of Consultants supported by a dedicated team of specialist nursing staff who are committed to improving the patient pathway to promote and deliver high standards of patient care, outcomes, experience, safety and quality. Your application and interview will demonstrate the skill set needed to join us in delivering, developing and teaching expert care within this exciting and challenging specialty.


Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience in all aspects of geriatric medicine including additional evidence of Orthogeriatric expertise.

This post is situated in West Central Scotland covering the Inverclyde area which is just and 30 minutes from the urban vibe of the centre of Glasgow and within easy access to Edinburgh. The region boasts great scenery, a vibrant housing market and great transport links via the close proximity to Glasgow International Airport and access to a national road and rail networks. The region includes a variety of towns and villages including the main towns Greenock, Port Glasgow and Gourock on the Firth of Clyde, as well as smaller coastal towns and villages such as Inverkip and Wemyss Bay to the South West. Further inland you'll find picturesque rural villages such as Kilmacolm, recently voted in 2019 as one of the best places to live in the UK. The area is enjoying substantial regeneration with major investment in schools; leisure and retail facilities; and housing – numerous big name builders are currently creating a range of new homes in the region which includes The Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project. The area has excellent state and private schools. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park is also within 45 minutes drive.


To work as a consultant within the United Kingdom, you must have General Medical Council (GMC) registration with a Licence to Practice and be listed on the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Geriatric Medicine or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview or eligibility for specialist registration through Certificate of Eligibility of Specialist Registration (CESR).
