Job Advert
CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN (Ref: 24752)
Flexible Part-time contract, 30 weeks per annum
Or full time, permanent positions available
Salary in range £82,669- £109,849 per annum (pro rata) plus 8% on-call supplement, Distant Island Allowance of £1,895 per annum[1]
NHS Shetland is the most northerly Health Service in Scotland and is a unique setting in which to develop your career. We are, of course, a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. However, what we lack in size, we more than make up for by way of highly integrated, person centred and multi-professional ethos that characterises every aspect of our operations.
The job of Consultant Physician in the Gilbert Bain is for someone who wishes to practice a wide ranging role as general physician and not that of a super specialist or narrow focused physician.
As the role can be demanding and patients present with a broad range of pathologies, the Consultant Physicians work closely and collaboratively together offering mutual support and advice, which is also the case across the wider Consultant team to provide shared care for patients as required. This team based approach to patient care enhances patient safety as well as providing a supportive working environment. In addition to seeking support of locally based colleagues we are also able to seek help and advice from a wide range of specialist colleagues in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, our local tertiary referral centre.
We are looking to appoint part time or full time Consultants. Part time Consultants will cover a rota in Shetland, alongside working for another Health Board/Trust of your choice on a part-time basis in order to maintain clinical skills and special interests. We would like successful candidates to undertake a minimum of 17 weeks clinical practice in Shetland, in 4 week blocks, with up to 13 weeks made up of pro rata annual leave, study leave and continuous professional development time or sub speciality interest time.
You will provide an on call commitment whilst working in Shetland; there will be no on call requirement during the 13 week CPD/sub speciality time. Remuneration will be commensurate with the Scottish Consultant Scale at 0.58WTE. In addition the post holder will have a reasonable training allowance to cover the cost to attend suitable courses and conferences. Travel to and from Shetland will be supported and accommodation available to you for each rotation.
This is an established blended model and Consultants will be joining a team that includes doctors who live and work in Shetland on a permanent basis, alongside colleagues who provide part time, rotational cover.
This is a beautiful part of the world, with a satisfyingly different lifestyle from the metropolitan centres. The diverse nature of Shetland’s culture, the stunning scenery, the wildlife, even the local dialect, as well as the spread of different islands all make for particular professional and personal challenges. Shetland is a world where wildlife is truly wild, where otters and seals play in quiet coves, and the air is full of the sound of wild birds, crowding the jagged cliffs in huge and noisy colonies. There are regular sightings of Killer Whales and superb displays of rare sub-arctic flora.
