We are looking to appoint a AFC Band 7 Clinical Scientist who has or is close to acheiving HCPC registration in the modality of Clinical Biochemistry. The successful candidate will join our team in the Blood Sciences Department within NHS Tayside and based at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. The role will enable your continued development as a Clinical Biochemist and also require you to have or develop particular specialist knowledge and experience with a particular emphasis on Mass Spectrometry applications in Clinical Laboratories but alsoImmunoassay. You will build on your broad range of experience in Clinical Biochemistry and provide scientific input into both the core automated and specialist biochemistry sections of the department. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to service improvement and to develop as part of the wider Blood Sciences team to provide leadership and direction across the department.


Blood Sciences (encompassing Biochemical Medicine, Haematology and Immunology) within NHS Tayside provides a high-quality, patient-focussed comprehensive, 24/7/365 service to adults and children of Tayside and North East Fife from 2 laboratories in Dundee and Perth. The department also encompasses the Scottish Bowel Screening laboratory in Dundee. Annual workload is over 6.5 million test results from approximately 750,000 requests. The Blood Science Department has seen extensive development and investment in recent years and continues to develop. The department is recognised internationally for a number of its areas of activity. Facilities include state-of-the-art specialist equipment, automation and tracking systems housed in modern, air-conditioned buildings. Blood Sciences is accredited as a single multidisciplinary department by UKAS and is seeking to attain accreditation to ISO 22870 for POCT. The department also has state of the art chromatographic and mass spectrometry equipment. The post holder plays a leading role within the Blood Sciences team to enable delivery of these services.


This is an opportunity for a keen and enthusiastic person to work as one of the Senior Clinical Scientists in Chemistry in a busy department at the heart of a large teaching hospital which provides a full range of clinical and diagnostic services to NHS Tayside, North-East Fife and South Grampian. The Department of Blood Science is MHRA compliant; UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 and holds IBMS Training approval until 2020.


You must be currently registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Clinical Scientist or must be undertaking pre-registration training (as part of e.g. an STP programme) with HCPC registration pending within the next 6-12 months.


You will be working with Siemens analysers in a state of the art Corelab laboratory with Advia 2400 Vista and Centaur (immunoassay) technology and in the Specialist Biochemistry laboratory, LCMS, HPLC, High Resolution Accurate Mass Spectrometer/ Pro Viva-e for toxicology, Sebia Capillarys/ Hydrasys for protein electrophoresis and a Siemens Immulite. Over the next 12 months the department will be undertaking a refresh of automated routine platforms that will require support from the postholder.


We are looking for a member of staff that can demonstrate team spirit, initiative, and flexibility with the enthusiasm to further develop and have proven ability to support further development of the service to ensure continued compliance with ISO 15189 Standards. You will work with a considerable degree of autonomy and have the responsibility for providing professional, scientific and technical leadership


As the Senior Clinical Scientist you will be expected to work closely with the senior BMS in Chemistry, and the Blood Sciences Associate Service Managers to ensure continued UKAS accreditation; this post involves Out of Hours working, weekend, and some early evening and Public Holiday duties.


We can offer you the scope to advance and develop your skills within a supportive and progressive environment. You should be a good communicator with proven skills to deliver training and support to a wide range of laboratory staff including pre registration Clinical Scientist, BMS and university placement students.


You will also be expected to support the professional scientific staff and service managers in delivering the analytical services and to carry out general laboratory duties.
