In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, an exciting opportunity has arisen in the Public Health Department for a number of Health Protection  Nurse Specialist secondment/fixed term posts. The postholders will be critical to the health protection input to the NHS Highland COVID-19 response. 
In addition to the COVID-19 response, the postholders will provide Health Protection Nurse advice on health protection issues more generally including communicable diseases, infection prevention control, and environmental health hazards and will assist with the implementation of the public health response to health protection incidents and outbreaks including that of COVID-19. They will be integral to the efforts of the Health Protection Team whose role is to ensure the health of the population in Highland is protected and promoted. 

NHS Highland serves a total population of around 320,000. You will be based in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, renowned for its beauty and quality of life which offers a lifestyle only dreamt of in other parts of the country. 

You will work in a small, friendly Health Protection Team which sits within the wider multi-disciplinary Public Health Directorate. 

Duties include: assisting with the health protection response to COVID-19, assisting in the investigation and management of confirmed, probable and possible cases of infection (e.g. Legionella) and other communicable diseases (e.g. meningococcal meningitis, diphtheria) and also in the control of specific outbreaks locally (i.e. gastro intestinal infections in care homes and nurseries), providing specialist nursing advice, information and training to NHS professionals, local authority, Scottish Prison Service, private and voluntary organisations, educational establishments and the general public on health protection issues and providing support to the wider contact tracing team within NHS Highland’s local contact tracing function .

Applicants should be on the Nursing and Midwifery Council's register and should have a minimum of three years post-registration clinical experience, some of which should ideally be in a community setting.
