Job Advert

We are looking for a talented and motivated professional to define and drive our communications, engagement and public affairs strategy at NHS Highland, as we prepare for a different way of delivering services. You will have the opportunity to involve and engage a wide variety of stakeholders across our extensive Board area at a time when health and social care is at the forefront of hearts and minds nationally and locally.  You will be part of shaping our future, telling our story in having engaged with our staff, the people who use our services and the public through communities.

This is a demanding and exciting role, public interest in our Board is high and as such we have significant levels of media and political interaction.  This is a challenging time for the NHS and how we engage and communicate is key to achieving informed and successful transformation.  If you want to really make a difference, this is a fantastic opportunity.

This post reports to the Deputy Chief Executive and will require extensive experience in creating and managing strategic and operational communication plans for internal and external audiences, working with the press and managing public relations and our social media and online presence.  You will have a track record in building productive and successful approaches to Community Engagement and Participation.

If you have experience of working in Healthcare or a Public Sector organisation, that would be great, but it’s not essential, as if you have the drive and enthusiasm and a willingness to learn quickly, your senior level communications experience in any other large scale organisation will be considered.  You will have well-developed influencing and communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships across our complex organisation, our communities and regional and national structures, as well as be able to evidence your strength in directing, developing and motivating colleagues within your function.

NHS Highland is responsible for the health of a population of over 320,000 people across the Highlands, including Argyll and Bute.  In 2020/21 NHS Highland has a Revenue budget of over £920m and a Capital budget of £65m which includes a number of significant projects which are anticipated in the next five years including the Elective Care Centre.

Our predominantly remote and rural Board covers 41% of the land mass of Scotland from Caithness to Campbeltown.   We are a fully integrated health and care system, with the ground-breaking Lead Agency model of the Highland Health and Social Care Partnership, created in 2012 as well as an Integrated Joint Board overseeing the Health & Social Care Partnership model in Argyll & Bute.

The Highlands offer an excellent quality of life and work life balance in an area of outstanding natural beauty with a range of cultural, musical, leisure and sporting opportunities throughout the year. Inverness, which is rapidly expanding is the ‘happiest’ city in Scotland with well-established road, rail and air links. Schools in the Highlands are rated very highly, crime rates are the lowest in Scotland and there is a wide range of urban, suburban and rural property within easy commuting distance of Inverness. Do come and join us here.
