Job Advert

Clinical Development Fellow (CDF) – Dermatology and Acute Medicine

6 months fixed term from Aug 2020 (fixed term)

Full time

Salary Scale - £32,961 – £51,828

Applications are invited from trainee doctors having recently completed or about to finish either UK Foundation Programmes or Core Medical Training to apply for the positions of Clinical Development Fellow (CDF) in Dematology and Acute Medicine.

This exciting post offers the opportunity to work in the Dermatology Department at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. The focus of the post will be around delivery of outpatient clinics. The successful candidate can expect to receive tailored support, education and training from consultants within the department to help them develop and improve key skills in this area. There will also be an expectation that the CDF will attend and participate in departmental MDT meetings. In addition, there is an opportunity to learn minor surgery skills. CDFs will have a protected day for development work. This may include quality improvement projects, teaching and education, management and leadership opportunities.

The dermatology service functions as a fully integrated department with all members contributing to a team-based approach to patient care and this appointment will play an important role in this team.. The department currently consists of 4 consultants, 1 nurse consultant 2 specialist nurses along with a dedicated team of nurses who do stand alone clinics and deliver specialist treatments including phototherapy, photodynamic therapy and skin surgery. We have a very close link with the Plastic Surgery team and clinics and surgical sessions are run in parallel in the dermatology department at Stirling Community Hospital  on a Thursday and FVRH on a Tuesday. The fortnightly Skin MDT also includes the teams from Orofaciomaxillary surgery and ENT. The dermatology department cares for patients with the full range of dermatological diseases. We run specialist clinics for patients on advanced therapies. There is a weekly paediatric dermatology clinic alternating between FVRH and SCH and these clinics also have a Nurse Specialist clinic running in parallel.

The post will include working in the Clinical Assessment Unit within the Acute Medicine Unit.  This is a 16 bedded unit with a dedicated area for delivering Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC).

The unit manages patients referred from both primary care and the Emergency Department with a predicted length of stay of <48 hours.  There is a dedicated Consultant Acute Physician ward round each morning (Monday-Thursday) with input from the on-call consultant physicians and geriatricians. The AEC service is led by Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs).  The unit is also supported by a registrar in Acute Medicine plus an ACCS doctor, CMT1 doctor and several F1 doctors. In addition the on call team consists of Medical ST3+ level registrar, a FY2+ level doctor, ANP and FY1. There is a CDF working with the frailty project based in AAU.

This post would allow the post holder to work under the direct supervision of a Consultant in Acute Medicine. This would include assessing patients newly presenting to the service, and discussing their management, plus contributing to ward rounds.  There will be an opportunity to help develop the AEC service in conjunction with the ANPs and Consultant Acute Physicians.  Depending on previous experience there will be the opportunity to undertake and teach practical procedures including (but not limited to) lumbar punctures, ascitic taps and drains, and pleural taps and drains.

There is no acute on-call commitment with this post. If the successful candidate wishes to join the staff bank locum opportunities within Forth Valley may be available.

The appointment will be on a full-time basis and remuneration will be determined by the pay and conditions of hospital medical and dental staff (NHS Circular: PCS (DD) 2019/2).

Applicants are encouraged to visit the Department and meet key staff. Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Colin Morton, Clinical Lead, colin.morton@nhs.net  or Dr Siobhan Sinclair, Consultant Dermatologist.  Siobhan.sinclair@nhs.net
