Applications are invited for a Clinical Scientist, employed by NHS Tayside and based at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. The successful candidate will join a team of seven other Consultants responsible for providing Bacteriology, Virology and Infection Prevention and Control services.


NHS Tayside provides comprehensive clinical services to a population of around 400,000. The major hospitals are Ninewells, Perth Royal Infirmary and Stracathro, with close links to the University of Dundee Medical School. The Department is situated in Ninewells and carries out over 325,000 investigations per year. Bacteriology employ the Bruker MALDI-TOF, BacTAlert, Vitek 2 and Cepheid GeneXpert, while in virology the Siemens Centaur, Diasorin Liaison and Hologic Panther platforms are used alongside a wide range of commercial and in-house developed real-time PCR assays. The LIMS (LabCentre) is linked to electronic test requesting (ICE). The department is UKAS accredited.


You will be responsible for providing diagnostic and treatment advice across the health board area. The out-of-hours on-call rota is 1:5 and attracts an availability supplement and on-call payment. There is regular liaison with a number of clinical areas, including ICU, surgical HDU and orthopaedics. The department has two Specialist Trainee posts, provides Core Infection Training, and has one pre-registration Clinical Scientist in training. Ninewells hospital has a purpose-built Infectious Diseases unit and there are close links with ID.


The department of Infection Prevention and Control is well-staffed with IPC nurses and there is also administrative support. ICNET is interfaced with the LIMS. The breakdown of direct clinical care and supporting professional activities to be discussed and agreed with the successful applicant.


Applicants must be a Clinical Scientist on the HCPC register with FRCPath or equivalent, a postgraduate degree and possess a broad knowledge of clinical microbiology.
