Trainee Dental Nurse


This is a fixed term NHSL wide training position until March 2021 and offered at a Band 4 (Annex 21) Agenda for change £22,152 - £24,258 per annum.


This is a fantastic training opportunity combining theoretical training delivered by NHS Education for Scotland at Glasgow Dental Education and Training Centre and on-the-job practical training within clinical dental settings across Lanarkshire.  Through this training candidates will learn and achieve the following:



  • Nationally recognised Dental Nurse Qualification.
  • A level of specialist theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to work  with a variety of clinicians and respond to any situation that develops, including emergencies
  • Experience working in a dental surgery. Experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment and experience of working as a dental nurse in more than one branch of dentistry would be advantageous
  • Experience of working with a variety of clinicians in a variety of settings and  be able to confidently assist the dentist to  provide a full range of dental treatment
  • Experience will ensure they have a level of understanding of and can anticipate the support the dentist and the patient needs so that treatment can be provided in a safe, economical, efficient and effective manner.
  • Commitment to continuing Professional Development
  • Experience in clinical governance including audit
  • The ability to work with people and have a range of patient management skills and good interpersonal skills
  • Able to communicate well at all levels – good reporting skills verbal and written
  • A flexible and adaptable approach to work
  • Demonstrate self motivation , use initiative and accept responsibility
  • Good organizational and administrative skills.
  • The ability to take direction and work as part of a team through procedures and protocols to meet agreed targets.
  • The ability, when necessary, to use initiative, intuition and know how in imaginative and creative ways to overcome problems and stimulate change.
  • To be able to cope confidentially with a designated work remit, but yet remain a part of the wider dental team in Lanarkshire.
  • IT skills, to use a computer and have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and an understanding of the Data Protection act
  • Knowledge of dental procedures, new techniques and up to date knowledge about materials.
  • Knowledge of NHS Lanarkshire Policies and administrative procedures
  • P.D.P.
  • Awareness of patient confidentiality, child protection issues, the Disability Discrimination Act and the Adults with Incapacity Act
  • Manual handling skills
  • Must have a valid full driving licence and access to a car
  • CPR skills
