7 weeks paid global health practice
Fixed rotational working pattern of 4 weeks on island followed by 8 weeks off Shetland

NHS Shetland is the most northerly Health Service in Scotland and is a unique setting in which to develop your career in global health. We are, of course, a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. We have an established group of clinicians with a global health interest and NHS Scotland has links with academic partners that also support global health fellowships.
The job of Acute or Emergency Physician in the Gilbert Bain Hospital is for someone who wishes to practice a wide ranging role and not that of a super specialist or narrow focused physician. In addition to acute medical presentations you will be responsible for the acute care of children and mental health patients.
The successful candidates would undertake a minimum of 17 weeks clinical practice in Shetland, in 4 week blocks, with up to 13 weeks made up of pro rata annual leave, study leave, continuous professional development, and paid global health practice. The 4 week blocks of on island work would be on a fixed rotation with gaps of 8 weeks off island.
You will provide an on call commitment whilst working in Shetland; there will be no on call requirement during the 13 week leave/global health time. Remuneration will be commensurate with the Scottish Consultant Scale at 0.58WTE. In addition, the post holder will have a reasonable training allowance to cover the cost to attend suitable courses and conferences. Travel to and from Shetland, from within the UK, will be supported and accommodation available to you for each rotation on the islands.
NHS Shetland has links with several organisations active in global health. For candidates without an established global health practice we would be happy to support them developing an area of interest. Closing date: 27th September 2020
Interviews will be held via Teams on 7th October 2020
