Job Advert
NHS Shetland is the most northerly Health Service in the country and a unique setting in which to develop your career. We are a tight-knit organisation with approximately 650 staff looking after the health needs of some 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. We follow a highly professional ethos that characterises every aspect of our operations. All in all you’ll find a superb degree of professionalism allied to a practical, resolute approach to the challenges of working in a remote island setting
We are looking to appoint a full time consultant anaesthetist to work in NHS Shetland who will work at the Gilbert Bain Hospital, Lerwick. Whilst the post is of a general nature, every effort will be made to accommodate a successful candidate’s subspecialty interest; an interest in pain medicine, trauma, obstetric anaesthesia are examples of specialities that could be accommodated. NHS Shetland wishes to be open and flexible in order to accommodate the needs of any applicant wishing to maintain skills. Therefore, we would consider applicants wishing to split their time between Shetland and a mainland hospital or other medical employment e.g. Retrieval medicine.
The Anaesthetic Department provides comprehensive general anaesthetic and critical care services. In addition, because of the remote nature of Shetland there is the necessity on occasion for anaesthetists to provide an enhanced trauma resuscitation service, to provide expertise in the resuscitation and stabilisation of neonates and paediatric patients, and to reap the reward of being able to adapt core anaesthetic skills to suit unpredictable and potentially challenging clinical scenarios arising outside the traditional theatre-based environment.
This is a beautiful part of the world with a satisfyingly different lifestyle from the metropolitan centres and is perfectly family friendly. The diverse nature of Shetland’s culture, the stunning scenery, the wildlife, the local dialects as well as the spread of different islands all make for greater professional and personal challenges. Shetland is a world where wildlife is truly wild - otters and seals play in quiet coves and the air is full of the sound of wild birds crowding the jagged cliffs in huge and noisy colonies. There are regular sightings of killer whales and superb displays of rare sub-arctic flora.
