Public Health Scotland (PHS) is a new organisation between the Scottish Government and Local Government, working in partnership, to provide leadership to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of the people of Scotland.
Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 with the formal status of a National Special Health Board employing around 1100 people, and with an annual budget of around £60 million, Public Health Scotland will provide authoritative information and services to support people and communities across Scotland. It will lead the national response to unforeseen health emergencies and will contribute to national and local government policy through its provision of robust data and intelligence.
Data Driven Innovation (DDI) is a directorate of Public Health Scotland and provides a range of specialised support services that enable NHS Boards to focus their efforts on delivering health improvement and patient care. DDI collects, validates, interprets and disseminates information on Health, and Health and Social Care in Scotland, providing support and advice to the Scottish Government Health Department, NHS Boards, Local Authorities and to a variety of professional bodies and researchers.
We are looking to recruit a Cancer Information Officer to our Cancer Registration Team. You will be outposted from the main PHS premises and based in either Ayr or Crosshouse Hospital.
You will use the Scottish Cancer Registry system ‘SOCRATES’ to collect information and register new cases of cancer incidence by interpreting and extracting patient information from electronic patient records, using expertise, skills and in-depth knowledge of the disease, international classifications of diseases and staging definitions to establish the most appropriate clinical codes to accurately register and confirm tumours for your area of responsibility.
Quality assure samples of national cancer datasets submitted by NHS Boards by interrogating and interpreting clinical information held on various electronic patient records for verification. You will give verbal feedback on the QA findings to the NHS Boards ensuring that the timetable for the national programme of work is met.
Plan and co-ordinate visits to NHS hospitals, private hospitals and Primary Care organisations, maintaining professional working relationships with NHS Board staff in order to promote the work of the team and DDI’s service areas is a key requirement of this post.
You must be educated to HNC/HND level or have relevant experience in cancer information or a health records/information role.
Knowledge of the disease of cancer anatomy and medical terminology are key requirements along with proven skills in the use of interrogating and interpreting information systems and the use of Microsoft Office applications.
Experience of clinical coding, and knowledge of the disease of cancer including oncology terminology and treatment pathways is desirable.
You must have well developed organisational, planning and time management skills; along with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, demonstrating good accuracy and attention to detail. There will be the occasional need to travel.
The successful candidate(s) must comply with the Mandatory Induction Standards and with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers.
