During a 2 year training program you will work towards the competencies required to register as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council You will be supported in attaining these by the Buttercups distance learning course which encompasses in-work competency based training allowing you to meet the necessary standard for registration.
As a Pre- Registration Pharmacy Technician in Primary Care you be based primarily in GP practice but will be required to spend at least 40% of your time in either a community pharmacy or a hospital pharmacy department or a combination of both learning key knowledge and skills such as;
- Understanding the role of the pharmacy technician working in GP practices as part of the Pharmacotherapy Service
- Developing the competencies required to operate as a Primary Care Pharmacy Technician once training period is completed
- Dispensing prescriptions and understanding the different types of prescriptions
- Working with different IT systems
- Understanding and using Standard Operating procedures to ensure safe practice
- Understand risk management processes
- Understanding the uses of medicines in different clinical areas (e.g. diabetes)
- Understand stock management systems and stock ordering with relation to medicines
- Undertaking audits to identify and improve systems and processes around medication supply and use
There are various other elements which are included in the training which will be specified in more detail when the successful candidate takes up the post.
To apply you must have –
4 National 5 Grades at A or B (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry to meet the course entry requirements. There may be an entrance exam to the training course for candidates to ensure candidates have sufficient underpinning knowledge.
Good numeracy and communication skills, both oral and written.
Experience of working in a pharmacy is desirable, but not essential as full training will be provided.
